Lighting Technician
Flyspace Productions is a full service, woman-owned event management, event production, and fine arts company located in Pittsburgh, PA. We are responsible for producing more than a dozen festivals and hundreds of other events every year. Our Production Department supports events of all types with full-scale, in-house audio, lighting, video, rigging, and stages including the largest fleet of Stageline Mobile Stages on the East Coast. Our Fine Arts & Exhibition Services department supports galleries, temporary exhibitions, and public art projects through exhibition management, fabrication, installation, and staffing.
We are seeking to add a full time Lighting Technician. This person will report to the Lighting Manager and will be responsible for the preparation, transportation, set up, operation, tear down, and maintenance of lighting and electrics equipment including theatrical fixtures, generators and power distribution, and event lighting.
This is a full time, non-exempt position with a starting rate of $20+ per hour and benefits including healthcare, vision insurance, dental insurance, retirement savings plan with company match, employee assistance program, paid time off, floating holidays, and more. This person will primarily report to our Northside shop and will generally in the shop to prepare gear during the week and on shows on the weekend. We expect that this position will require irregular work hours including nights, weekends, and holidays.
A successful candidate for this position has extensive experience in lighting and electrics and knows how to operate and program lighting console, how to properly and safely hang and cable fixtures, how to create and read lighting show paperwork, and existing technical understanding of event production. This person may be required to run a crew from time to time and should have had experience managing a team, and is a detailed planner and excellent communicator. This person will also have a valid driver's license and the ability to obtain a DOT Med Card, as well as the ability to drive up to a 26' box truck (non-CDL) or tow a long trailer with a large pick up truck. This candidate will know how to properly pack a truck and ensure equipment arrives safely.
The Position Breakdown
Position: Production Lighting Specialist (Technician)
Primary Focus: Prepare and operate lighting and other production equipment for shows as needed
Secondary Focus: Transporting and maintaining equipment
Reports to: Lighting Manager
Job Description:
- Assist with maintaining, operating, and transporting lighting and production equipment as assigned
- Properly prepare equipment for shows and safely pack trucks or stages
- Provide on-site technical expertise and oversight to program and operate consoles, operate consoles, and ensure the safe installation and operation of equipment
- Direct on-site crew as needed
- Operate company owned heavy equipment such as lifts, front loader, or forklifts
- Transport equipment to and from the shop and event sites using company owned vehicles such as a pick up truck, box truck, and tow behind trailers (DOT med card required)
- Assist with shop operations and maintenance
- Assist with other production equipment maintenance and repairs
Competencies and Skills Required:
- Previous experience working in theatrical or live event production
- Working knowledge of event production technology
- The ability to lift, push, or carry 25+ pounds
- Clean driving record with current, valid driver's license
- The ability to operate company vehicles and heavy equipment including large pick up trucks, box trucks up to 26', and cargo vans
- Ability to organize and direct a crew
- Must be over 18
- Must be able to legally work in the US for this employer
- Must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19
- Willing to work in a flexible schedule that may include long hours and irregular times, including weekends, nights, and holidays
- Maturity and understanding of an artistic process and the ability to work closely with clients, including artists and designers, in a diplomatic and professional manner
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to maintain and establish positive client relationships
